“Nice flowers, Renee! You do Poison Ivy a favor?”

[Detective Comics #747]

Reblogging this because I just realized:
1. This was before Renee came out
2. Considering that now, it makes the Poison Ivy comment 50x funnier to me.
3. Greg Rucka had to have been planning this all along.

That’s why when people are like “Oh, but Renee was so straight for so long!” I invite them to read this and then come talk at me about how straight Renee was before Gotham Central.

Okay I’m a big fan of Renee Montoya. But realistically her character was probably was straight before Gotham Central. And only looking back you probably could make up a excuse for this, simply because there is so little evidence of her sexuality because she was a minor character. For history sake, during that time Gordon clashed with Mayor Krol, who had him replaced as Commissioner by Essen. Essen made Bock her assistant, much as Montoya had been Gordon’s. Montoya kept in touch with James Gordon as he started his campaign as a third party candidate for mayorship ; at the same time she dated a male Coast Guard captain named Johnny.
In hindsight, the simplest No-Prize explanation might be that her close friend Johnny was gay, and that they decided to pretend to date each other in order to remain closeted given their gay-hostile work environments. Looking back, you could just say that it was misdirection to keep up the appearances since she uncharacteristically leaked this detail of her private life to the rest of the MCU.
